MY EXPERIENCE

My experience in Psychology 303 at Old Dominion University was life-altering. The intricacy of human behavior and the myriad of elements that shape it have been illuminated for me through this course.

The significance of individual differences in influencing behavior is one of the most crucial lessons I took away from this training. I learned that everyone is different, having their own experiences, personalities, and biological makeup. These variations may significantly affect how someone feels, thinks, and acts.

The significance of environmental influences in influencing behavior was another thing I discovered. We examined how culture, social norms, and environmental factors affect behavior. This taught me to consider conduct holistically, considering both personal differences and outside influences that may impact behavior.

The analytical and critical thinking abilities I acquired in Psychology 303 were invaluable. In addition, I developed my ability to analyze research studies and apply psychological theories to practical circumstances through assignments and class discussions. These abilities will be helpful as I continue to work on my academic and career objectives.

Overall, my time with Psychology 303 has been enlightening and rewarding. I appreciate the information and abilities I have learned from this course, and I can't wait to use them in my upcoming academic and professional endeavors.

How do you typically react to constructive criticism about your performance? Why?

I have grown a lot over the years, especially since I am Active Duty Navy and everything we do is “performance” based. I used to take it extremely personal when someone wanted to tell me “How horrible” my work was. I found that I would take it extremely personal and as negative judgement from people who really didn’t value my work and or really didn’t understand what my job fully entailed. The more evaluations I received the less I began to think of it as negative criticism because I valued myself more and understood the way that criticism flowed in the organization. I really do think that presentation of the information mattered also. The way the person presented the information to me effected the way I took in the criticism.

What makes performance feedback helpful to you to improve your performance?

The presentation of the performance feedback is a way to help improve my performance. I don’t want a person to just tell me everything I did perfectly, I want to be told what I could have done better. I also want some suggestions on how to get there or what the person is looking for from me. I think setting the expectation can assist in improving my performance. Sometimes knowing that I am performing at the expectation is reassuring and gives me motivation to continue to work hard or maybe even harder.

What makes performance feedback unhelpful or even detrimental to you?

Performance feedback that isn’t based on an accurate view of my actual work performance but instead is based on a value system against my peers that do not perform the job as me can be unhelpful. I feel it doesn’t necessarily follow the Campbell model, so it doesn’t give me the opportunity to accurately grow from the feedback. The negative affect of a value system based on numbers that can be given out versus numbers in a job field has been shown to negatively affect advancement and career growth.
